Requirement Analysis SPSU - AUV 2005

Operational Requirements

These requirements focus on the operation of the system - what the system is required to do.

  1. Water tight at 40ft
  2. Move forwards and backwards at variable speeds
  3. Be able to stop
  4. Change and maintain depth
  5. Change direction
  6. Know where we are relative to where we started
  7. Collision avoidance
  8. 0.1 buoyancy
  9. Below 110lb weight
  10. Balanced horizontal stability
  11. Transmit data to shore
  12. Autonomous operation
  13. Drop markers
  14. Detect pinger locations
  15. Detect underwater visuals
  16. Power for 30 minutes minimal
  17. Collect and store data
  18. Emergency shut off
  19. Lifting hook
  20. Keep track of time

Environmental Considerations

These considerations focus on the environment the system is to operate within. Clearly define the basic environmental elements that could influence the sytsem.

  1. High wind
  2. Rain
  3. Direct sunlight
  4. heat
  5. temperature differential
  6. Power availability
  7. Network access
  8. Phone access
  9. Interference

User Considerations

These considerations focus on the user of the system. Things such as size, weight, depth, etc. should be looked at closely. These should be written as rules such as don't make mainentance openings to small for fingers. Be specific about size, however.

  1. Food (cooler)
  2. Rest
  3. First aid
  4. Team diver
  5. Laptop
  6. Team uniform
  7. Easy transportation/reasonable weight
  8. Visual indicators
  9. Restroom
  10. On sight documentation
  11. Tools/instrumentation
  12. Replacement parts and materials
  13. Sun protection
  14. Funs for individuals
  15. Business cards
  16. Modular for reuse/flexibility
  17. Easy Maintenance

Shipping Considerations

These considerations focus on transporting the system. Focus on listing conditions with which the sytem may be subjected such as shock and temperature variations.

  1. Organized
  2. Easy to pack
  3. Manageable weight
  4. Weather proof storage
  5. Safe and secure
  6. Carry on airplane
  7. Assemble and disassembly instructions
  8. Alternate plans

Lifecycle Planning

Here we focus on component reuse and disposal. This should not be limited to hardware but also software and documentation.

  1. Modular design
  2. Quality products
  3. Standard interface
